The effects of Bisphenol A (BPA) have long been noted. BPA mimics a naturally occurring sex hormone and is known to reduce sperm count, accelerate the onset of puberty, and damage sexual organs. If you had to venture a guess, I bet you’d say the government does all it can to keep BPA out of our food and water, and definitely away from kids. I’d probably say the same thing, but we’d both be wrong. Studies show that up to 95% of Americans have BPA in their urine. It gets there by leaching out of plastic bottles, food packaging, can linings, and many, many more products that we come in contact with every day. Even baby bottles are made from BPA.

Worse yet, recent studies show that BPA may be a contributing factor in the obesity and diabetes epidemics in America. These studies show that consistent exposure to BPA in mice induced an oversecretion of insulin as compared to mice treated with corn oil in a control group. Over a period of only days, the mice treated with BPA developed a resistance to BPA, a major step in the development of type 2 diabetes.

This is just another reason to stop the excessive use of plastics in America. We know they have had a major effect on our environment. But now the better quality of life that plastics once promised is putting our nation’s health at risk.
