Earth Day Network is starting a new series of weekly blog posts entitled: 100 Places to Check Out Before They're Gone. We hope to showcase the many natural wonders that are endangered by the effects of Global Warming. Look forward to a new post every Tuesday. Our debut post features New England - from its landscape to its skiing to its syrup.
...
For many New Englanders there is no better smell in the morning than fresh pancakes covered in Vermont Pure Maple Syrup. But for those persons not from the Great Northeast, New England has a vastly different allure. The unmatched colors of fall in New England have been drawing leaf-lovers to the region for generations. Unfortunately, global climate change is putting those deep auburn and maroon leaves - and the decadent, earthy syrup that lies beneath them - on the sightseer’s endangered places list.

The average winter temperature in Vermont has risen 2.2 degrees Fahrenheit over the last century, and could jump as high as 5 degrees Fahrenheit by the year 2100. As global warming takes hold, New England’s forests will have to adapt to a warmer climate, losing the beautiful Sugar Maples and similar trees that so many have traveled to the region to see.

And you can kiss the East Coast’s best skiing and snowboarding goodbye: Shorter seasons and higher cost (due to increased snow making) will slowly shut down ski resorts throughout the Green and White Mountains. What to do? Call in sick next month, grab your walking stick, and hike the Long Trail before New England’s landscape goes from picturesque to pedestrian.
