If You Are What You Eat, Double Check Your Sushi
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

If the old adage, “you are what you eat,” is true, you may want to double-check your sushi order: a new study, conducted by two high-school students, reveals that we may not know exactly what we’re eating – especially in the seafood realm.

Just out of curiosity, Trinity High School students Kate Stoeckle and Louisa Strauss decided to conduct their own experiment: after culling samples from sushi dinners around Manhattan, the students sent them off to a lab at the University of Guelph in Ontario, where a graduate student, Eugene Wong, ascertained each sample's identity. The project, called Fish Barcode of Life, revealed some shocking truths about commercial sushi: visits to 4 restaurants and 10 grocery stores in Manhattan confirmed that 2 of the 4 restaurants and 6 of 10 grocery stores had sold mislabeled fish.

Their experiment underscores the importance of nurturing students’ natural curiosity, and encouraging them to question and explore the world around them. It comes out at a time when a piece of legislation is on the table to engage children in just that, with the intent of cultivating the analytical skills students will need to take on future challenges. This bill, called the No Child Left Inside Act and championed by John Sarbanes (D-MD), would ensure that all our nation’s schools were given adequate funding for environmental education—time exploring the natural world while cultivating valuable analytical skills they will need to take on future challenges.
